Brown discusses how she entered the WAVES as a reporter assigned to write press releases on the WAVES and hometown news stories. She comments on living accommodations, friendships, and social life in Washington, DC. She was discharged from the Navy in September 1945. She did not feel the Navy challenged her and returned to her job on the Washington Bureau of the New York Times.

Nunzio J. Martino oral history transcription

Scope and Contents

Martino was drafted into the Navy in July 1943, trained at Newport, RI training station and sent to the Atlantic Amphibious Training Base at Camp Bradford, VA. He was sent to Newport for pre-commissioning training to join the crew of the USS Franklin. He was a Machinist Mate aboard the Franklin during its Pacific battles, including the March 19, 1945 attack near Japan where the ship was severely damaged and over 700 crew members killed.
