Kras discusses his service in the army, 1940-1945, including basic training, time in Australia, in New Caledonia with the Americal Division, Guadalcanal where his unit was attacked by the Japanese and was the sole survivor having killed ten of the enemy. He returned to the US where he was assigned guard duty in Chicago, IL. Kras was born and brought up in Cicero, IL. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps after graduation from high school and served in Illinois and Nevada. He joined the Army in 1940 and served in the Pacific Theater during the war. He remained in the Army after the war, was discharged, and joined the US Air Force.
