Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of twenty-seven boxes of official and personal papers that are divided into eight series that document the admiral's military career and retirement employment. The collection is unrestricted and open to researchers.Series One, Correspondence, contains the admiral's personal letters received, 1935-1988, and professional correspondence, 1955-1957. Correspondents include his brother Charles, family members and friends who wrote to him while he was at the U.S. Naval Academy, 1935-1939, and later assignments. Professional correspondence covers the years 1953-1957 and includes letters sent and received from naval personnel.Series Two, Writings, has the admiral's published and unpublished writings, dating from 1950 to 1985. Published writings appeared in The Navy Magazine and the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings.Series Three houses speeches given during the years 1962 to 1985. Topics vary and include convocation addresses, the Soviet Navy, logistics, and SEATO.Series Four contains published writings by prominent political figures and naval officers, including CDR Thomas Buell, Edward L. Katzenbach, Senator Robert Taft, and ADM Arleigh Burke, 1965-1988. Speeches by naval officers and political figures, 1953-1987, are in Series Five. They include President Richard M. Scope and Contents From the Record Group:

This collection consists of correspondence, reports, publications, photographs, audio cassettes, digital media (floppy disks and compact discs, etc.), and digital files regarding the International Seapower Symposium. These records document the organization and proceedings of each symposium and include speeches, presentations, schedules, programs, reports, and other materials used and referenced at each symposia. The extent of records for each symposium varies.

Records from 1969-1976 contain folders for each country that had an officer attending the symposium. Within these folders are correspondence, biographical and career information, and their travel arrangements. Also found within this record group are speeches and reports from symposia were established due to the influence of the International Seapower Symposium. These include the 1972 Regional Seapower Symposium, hosted biannually in Venice for naval leaders from Mediterranean and Black Sea countries to discuss common challenges, and the 1973 Hague Symposium, held annually to focus on post-conflict transitions and international justice.

Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of fifteen boxes of papers and two slipcases that document Taussig's life and naval career from 1884 to 1947. The papers are divided in to eight series: Correspondence, diaries and journals, published and unpublished writings, fitness and medical reports, subject files, miscellaneous imprints, hooks and newspapers and photographs.Series I, personal correspondence, contains letters sent to his parents, his brother Hawley and female cousins from the U.S. Naval Academy and subsequent assignments through 1917. There are both holograph and typed copies. Personal correspondence received includes letters from ADM John Jellicoe, RN and ADM Lewis Bayly, RN. Official navy correspondence contains requests for leave, promotions, orders, and claims. The letters are arranged chronologically.The larger portion of the correspondence treats the publicity created by Taussig's Senate testimony in 1940, where he predicted war wilh Japan in the Pacific. He received letters in support of his views and critical of his censure by President Roosevelt. These files are arranged alphabetically. In addition, there are several letters to Captain Paul B. Ryan from Taussig's son and daughter regarding his editing of the diary from the USS Wadsworth.Holograph journals and diaries compose Series II. Scope and Contents From the Collection: The personal papers of Raymond A. Spruance, was donated to the Naval War College by Mrs. Spruance in 1970, only a year after the admiral's death. The collection contains eleven boxes of manuscript materials, along with memorabilia, including uniform items, medals, and Japanese Samurai swords. The papers focus, in the main, on the admiral's distinguished naval career, aspects of his ambassadorial appointnent, and his retirement years.Series I, Correspondence, consists of letters relating to his position as Commander of the Central Pacific Force, 1943-1944; the Battle of Midway, 1943; official orders and copies of messages sent relating to duty assignments, 1906-1950; and letters received and drafts of letters sent regarding naval matters. Other correspondence focuses on the Naval History Division Spruance biography by V ADM Emmet P. Forrestel. Spruance was not a particularly loquacious person and was reluctant to commit his thoughts to paper, hence the correspondence series is limited in both scope and quantity.Writings and speeches comprise Series II and Series III. Speeches consist of holograph drafts and typescripts given when Spruance was Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, President of the Naval War College, and in a retired status.
