Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of 71 boxes of personal papers that span the admiral's naval career and retirement activities. The collection contains biographical infonnation, his correspondence, correspondence of others, his speeches and writings, speeches and writings of others, subject files, naval papers, miscellany and photographs. The admiral's aviation logs are not part of this collection and are located at the Pensacola Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida. Other than that one gap, the collection is a comprehensive collection of material documenting a naval career of over forty years and a career in the civilian defense industry that spanned two and a half decades.Series One, Biographical information, contains his official naval biography, a biographical statement for General Dynamics, Who's Who in America and The Blue Book 1970 Questionnaire, a passport application, a membership application for the Greenwich (CT.) Country Club, authentication of his birth date, personal information from the Class of 1930 Alunmi News colunm in Shipmate and a vita.Correspondence, Series II, consists of official and personal letters sent and received, although the latter are the larger segment. Most of the letters sent are carbon copies and date from the 1950s through the early 1990s; they focus on naval matters and Hayward's corporate connections. Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of seventeen boxes of papers that document his interest in naval airships and the Naval Airship Association, of which he was a member. The collection spans the years 1933–2005.Series I, Correspondence, includes letters both sent and received, 1945–1996. The bulk of the correspondence treats the Naval Airship Association, but also contains letters of appointment and those regarding his naval training and courses taken. Some of the correspondence includes the biographies of members of the Naval Airship Association.Series II, Naval Orders, contains his assignments from 1943 to 1968, as well as retirement papers. Series III, Books, has yearbooks; books on blimps, airship bases, airships, and U-boats; and a history of his hometown of Ironwood, Michigan. Content Description From the Collection: The papers, in the main, cover the period 1898-1987 and fully document his naval career and his retirement years. They are divided into six series. Series I, family papers, consists of genealogical materials taken from Morgan City, Louisiana Archives on the Brashear and Lawrence families, a history of Morgan City, LA, and correspondence and newspaper clippings regarding the restoration of the Lawrence family cemetery in Bayside, Long Island. Correspondence, speeches and writings of various family members are found here too, as well as biographical and autobiographical materials on Admiral Eccles.Correspondence, Series II, is divided into five subseries; Naval orders and career correspondence, personal correspondence, official correspondence, letters of condolence to Mrs. Eccles on the death of Admiral Eccles, and miscellaneous correspondence of others that was found in his papers.Eccles' correspondence reveals aspects of his naval career, his many professional and intellectual interests and associations, and his study of military logistics. Content Description From the Collection: The collection is divided into ten series. Series One, Biographical Information, contains Pineau’s vita and biographical information, while Series II, Civilian and Naval Papers, has personnel and retirement papers, 1965–1972, as well as his naval orders and fitness reports, 1943–1978.Correspondence, both letters sent and received, is one of the largest components of the collection and it is arranged by last name and topic for the years 1942–1993. Prominent correspondents include Hanson Baldwin, Captain Edward Beach, CDR Masatake Chihaya, James Fahey, Goro Nakano, the U.S. Naval Institute, Jurgen Rohwer, Robert Sherrod, and the Smithsonian Institution. A second segment of correspondence contains letters to and from individuals for whom he performed appraisals.Series Four holds speech notes and speeches that Pineau gave between 1965 and the early 1990s. In addition, there are speeches given by other individuals. Captain Pineau was a prolific writer on military topics, especially World War II.
