Content Description From the Collection: The papers of Captain Roy Campbell Smith, USN, were presented to the Naval War College in two separate lots: the first accession, composed primarily of U.S. Navy Department official orders, was given in 1941 by Commander Roy C. Smith Jr., his son, and the second accession, comprising the bulk of the collection, was donated through the Naval War College Foundation in 1983 by Mrs. William T. Sampson Smith, his youngest son's widow and second wife.The papers focus on Roy Campbell Smith's naval career, which spanned the last two decades of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. The collection contains documents relating to his early service with the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, R.I., his association with the Naval War College as a staff member over the years, his experiences as a naval attache in F ranee and pre-revolutionary Russia, his participation in the occupation of Vera Cruz in 1914, and his governorship of Guam. In addition, the papers shed light on navy personnel and promotion policies and efforts to reorganize the Navy Department after the turn of the century. The twenty-four box manuscript collection measures ten linear feet and is divided into four distinct series and is further divided into subseries. Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of 71 boxes of personal papers that span the admiral's naval career and retirement activities. The collection contains biographical infonnation, his correspondence, correspondence of others, his speeches and writings, speeches and writings of others, subject files, naval papers, miscellany and photographs. The admiral's aviation logs are not part of this collection and are located at the Pensacola Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida. Other than that one gap, the collection is a comprehensive collection of material documenting a naval career of over forty years and a career in the civilian defense industry that spanned two and a half decades.Series One, Biographical information, contains his official naval biography, a biographical statement for General Dynamics, Who's Who in America and The Blue Book 1970 Questionnaire, a passport application, a membership application for the Greenwich (CT.) Country Club, authentication of his birth date, personal information from the Class of 1930 Alunmi News colunm in Shipmate and a vita.Correspondence, Series II, consists of official and personal letters sent and received, although the latter are the larger segment. Scope and Contents From the Collection:

The collection consists of eight boxes that are divided into nine series. Series I, Biographical Data, contains Worthington’s obituary and several official biographical statements. Series II, Naval Orders, 1938–1962, houses naval orders, memoranda, and fitness and medical reports covering his active military career. Series III, Correspondence, undated–1995, contains both letters sent and received, including correspondence regarding the daring COCHINO rescue. Series IV, Writings, has Worthington’s wartime diary, 1941–1943, writings by other authors on submarines, and “The Silversides Story” by Frank Tannenbaum. Series V, Subject Files, has materials on USS SILVERSIDES, USS TOLOVANA, USS TUSK, USS COCHINO, and DEEP QUEST. Series VI, War Patrol Logs, contains the logs from ten war patrols of USS BALAO. Series VII, Miscellany, contains certificates, citations, calling cards, invitations, programs, rosters, newspaper clippings dealing with the COCHINO rescue and DEEP QUEST, memorabilia, and diplomas. Series VIII, Photographs, has photographs of a number of submarines, ships, submersibles, and people. Of special interest are photo albums of USS SILVERSIDES and USS BALAO. Series IX, Films and Slides, has videos of the BALAO, SARDA, TUSK, and SILVERSIDES. There are several reels of 16 mm film, including one entitled “The Silent Service.”
