Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of sixteen boxes of manuscripts that document the admiral's naval career from 1896 to 1953. The papers are important not only from the standpoint of tracing an officer's career path to flag rank, but they also provide insights into issues facing the Navy during the first four decades of the twentieth century and they chronicle events of the period.Series I consists of biographical information and includes an official navy biography as well as Snyder's service record, while Series II contains all of his naval orders from 1900 to 1945.The largest portion of the collection, however, contains Admiral Snyder's correspondence, which is divided into official Navy correspondence, personal correspondence, and Naval War College correspondence and contains both letters received and letters sent. Official correspondence, 1896-1947, contains requests for leave, transfers, appointments, meetings, assignments, applications, promotions, commissions, reports, fitness reports, medals, awards, requisitions, transportation and temporary duty. Personal correspondence, 1902-1953, contains letters to and from prominent naval officers and family members, including Edward E. Spafford, William A. Moffet, Ralph Earle, son Philip w. Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection consists of correspondence, ephemeral materials, logbooks, photographs, publications, and other papers relating to the Sims and Hitchcock families, particularly Admiral William S. Sims, his wife Anne Hitchcock Sims, and her father Ethan Allen Hitchcock. These papers detail the families’ personal lives and relationships as well as the careers of Admiral Sims and Ethan Allen Hitchcock. This collection serves as a great example of the dedication of the entire Sims family to preserve and honor the legacies of Admiral Sims and the Hitchcock family for future generations. Correspondence includes letters sent and received by Ethan A. Hitchcock, Anne H. Sims, William S. Sims, William S. Sims, Jr. and other members of the Sims and Hitchcock families. The majority of the original correspondence is of a personal nature detailing various aspects of family matters, daily activities, travel, and social interactions. Scope and Contents From the Collection:

The collection consists of eight boxes that are divided into nine series. Series I, Biographical Data, contains Worthington’s obituary and several official biographical statements. Series II, Naval Orders, 1938–1962, houses naval orders, memoranda, and fitness and medical reports covering his active military career. Series III, Correspondence, undated–1995, contains both letters sent and received, including correspondence regarding the daring COCHINO rescue. Series IV, Writings, has Worthington’s wartime diary, 1941–1943, writings by other authors on submarines, and “The Silversides Story” by Frank Tannenbaum. Series V, Subject Files, has materials on USS SILVERSIDES, USS TOLOVANA, USS TUSK, USS COCHINO, and DEEP QUEST. Series VI, War Patrol Logs, contains the logs from ten war patrols of USS BALAO. Series VII, Miscellany, contains certificates, citations, calling cards, invitations, programs, rosters, newspaper clippings dealing with the COCHINO rescue and DEEP QUEST, memorabilia, and diplomas. Series VIII, Photographs, has photographs of a number of submarines, ships, submersibles, and people. Of special interest are photo albums of USS SILVERSIDES and USS BALAO. Content Description From the Collection: The collection is divided into ten series. Series One, Biographical Information, contains Pineau’s vita and biographical information, while Series II, Civilian and Naval Papers, has personnel and retirement papers, 1965–1972, as well as his naval orders and fitness reports, 1943–1978.Correspondence, both letters sent and received, is one of the largest components of the collection and it is arranged by last name and topic for the years 1942–1993. Prominent correspondents include Hanson Baldwin, Captain Edward Beach, CDR Masatake Chihaya, James Fahey, Goro Nakano, the U.S. Naval Institute, Jurgen Rohwer, Robert Sherrod, and the Smithsonian Institution. A second segment of correspondence contains letters to and from individuals for whom he performed appraisals.Series Four holds speech notes and speeches that Pineau gave between 1965 and the early 1990s. In addition, there are speeches given by other individuals. Captain Pineau was a prolific writer on military topics, especially World War II. Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, speeches, newspaper articles, lectures, audio and video tape recordings, articles, and photographs relating to James B. Stockdale’s academic and naval careers from 1965 through 2005. The bulk of this collection documents his correspondence and work at the Naval War College, specifically his administrative and educational roles. Prominent correspondents include Professor Joseph G. Brennan (1910-2004), Admirals Carlisle Trost (1930-), Thomas Hayward (1924-), James Holloway III (1922-), Julien J. LeBourgeois (1923-2012), and Senators John Chafee (1922-1999), Sam Nunn (1938-), and John Tower (1925-1991). The majority of the correspondence relates to his professional work and responsibilities. Along with Stockdale’s published and unpublished writings on moral leadership, his prisoner of war experiences, and the mind in captivity, there are several articles by other academics and writers contained in this collection. Significant speeches from 1965-1993, which includes his time as president of the Naval War College, are in the collection.
