Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of twenty-seven boxes of official and personal papers that are divided into eight series that document the admiral's military career and retirement employment. The collection is unrestricted and open to researchers.Series One, Correspondence, contains the admiral's personal letters received, 1935-1988, and professional correspondence, 1955-1957. Correspondents include his brother Charles, family members and friends who wrote to him while he was at the U.S. Naval Academy, 1935-1939, and later assignments. Professional correspondence covers the years 1953-1957 and includes letters sent and received from naval personnel.Series Two, Writings, has the admiral's published and unpublished writings, dating from 1950 to 1985. Published writings appeared in The Navy Magazine and the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings.Series Three houses speeches given during the years 1962 to 1985. Topics vary and include convocation addresses, the Soviet Navy, logistics, and SEATO.Series Four contains published writings by prominent political figures and naval officers, including CDR Thomas Buell, Edward L. Scope and Content Note From the Collection: The collection consists of fifty-one boxes of published and unpublished research source material, as well as a small collection of personal papers.Series I, published material, contains a variety of research materials collected by Layton. It is divided into four subseries. Select volumes of Senshi Sosho, the official Japanese History of World War II, along with portions that were photocopied and hand bound by Layton form the first subseries. This material is in Japanese. Books, including works on naval intelligence, Japanese ship lists, both in English and Japanese, comprise subseries II. Subseries III contains copies of journal and magazine articles, book reviews and chapters of books on intelligence and military topics for the World War II period, as well as portions of a U.S. Naval Institute Oral History with Captain Joseph Rochefort. Strategic area planning maps of the Pacific Ocean are in subseries IV.Series II, unpublished material, contains, for the most part, documents that can also be found in the records of the National Security Agency located in the National Archives. This collection consists of correspondence, reports, publications, photographs, audio cassettes, digital media (floppy disks and compact discs, etc.), and digital files regarding the International Seapower Symposium. These records document the organization and proceedings of each symposium and include speeches, presentations, schedules, programs, reports, and other materials used and referenced at each symposia. The extent of records for each symposium varies.

Records from 1969-1976 contain folders for each country that had an officer attending the symposium. Within these folders are correspondence, biographical and career information, and their travel arrangements. Also found within this record group are speeches and reports from symposia were established due to the influence of the International Seapower Symposium. These include the 1972 Regional Seapower Symposium, hosted biannually in Venice for naval leaders from Mediterranean and Black Sea countries to discuss common challenges, and the 1973 Hague Symposium, held annually to focus on post-conflict transitions and international justice.

Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of sixteen boxes of manuscripts that document the admiral's naval career from 1896 to 1953. The papers are important not only from the standpoint of tracing an officer's career path to flag rank, but they also provide insights into issues facing the Navy during the first four decades of the twentieth century and they chronicle events of the period.Series I consists of biographical information and includes an official navy biography as well as Snyder's service record, while Series II contains all of his naval orders from 1900 to 1945.The largest portion of the collection, however, contains Admiral Snyder's correspondence, which is divided into official Navy correspondence, personal correspondence, and Naval War College correspondence and contains both letters received and letters sent. Official correspondence, 1896-1947, contains requests for leave, transfers, appointments, meetings, assignments, applications, promotions, commissions, reports, fitness reports, medals, awards, requisitions, transportation and temporary duty.
