Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of scrapbooks documenting the naval career of LCDR Coleman J. Gadbaw, Jr. from 1958-1974. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, military orders, certificates, photographs, correspondence, and other small souvenirs collected by Gadbaw throughout his career. His attendance at the Officers Training School in Newport in 1958 and the Naval War College in 1971 are recorded in these volumes. Also included is Gadbaw’s yearbook from his basic training in 1951 at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and one cruise book from his tour of duty on the U.S.S. Charles F. Adams.

Biographical Note

Coleman Jerome Gadbaw, Jr. was born on July 13, 1932 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and served up until his retirement as a Lieutenant Commander in April 1974. During his naval career, Gadbaw attended the Officers Training School in Newport, RI and was a student at the Naval War College in 1971.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These scrapbooks and cruise books were part of a donation to the NWC Museum by Tim Gadbaw (son of Coleman J. Gadbaw) in July 2018. Later that year, the NWC Collections Committee decided to transfer these materials to the Naval Historical Collection.
