Biographical / Historical
The Naval Torpedo Station was established in 1869 on Goat Island, Newport, Rhode Island. During World Wars I and II, the Naval Torpedo Station was instrumental in researching, constructing, and assessing underwater military weaponry such as steam torpedos and explosives for the US Navy. The station employed thousands of Newport residents. The station was reorganized several times beginning in 1951 and is now referred to as the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC).
