Historical Note
The Records of the Curriculum Board date from 1951 to 1972. Before its dissolution the Board was chaired by the Chief of Staff and included the Directors of the Colleges and Centers, the Secretary, the Special Academic Advisor, the Armed Forces and State Department Advisors, and the Professor of Libraries. The occupants of academic and military chairs acted as consultants to the Board. One of the functions of the Board was to conduct a review of the curricula of the Colleges and Centers for resident and correspondence courses. The Board also acted as a forum for the Directors of Colleges and Centers and the Chief of Staff on academic matters. Although not a policy making body, the board could make policy reconunendations. The Curriculum Board was dissolved in 1972 and its duties were assumed by the Academic Policy Committee.
The records of the Academic Board span the years 1960-1972. The President of the Naval War College served as the chairman of this Board and the membership included the Deputy, the Chief of Staff, the State Department Advisor, the Directors of Colleges and Centers, the Secretary and the Special Academic Advisor. The Armed Forces Advisors and the holders of specific Chairs acted as consultants to the Board. The functions of the Academic Board included reviewing and approving items after their processing by the Curriculum Board, and determining academic policies for the Naval War College. The Academic Board was also dissolved in 1972 and its functions assumed by the newly created Academic Policy Committee.
The Academic Policy Committee was established in August, 1972, following the demise of the Academic and Curriculum Boards. It was formed in order to provide the President, Naval War College with a formal organization to discuss the business of the College. The Committee discusses, develops, and establishes procedural and policy guidance for the academic activities of the College, and also acts on the recommendations of other Boards and Committees.
The President serves as chairman of this committee and its members include the Dean of Academics, the Special Academic Advisor, the Chairman of the Academic Departments, the Director of Libraries and the Executive Assistant to the Dean of Academics, who acts as Secretary. The Dean of Administration and the Directors of the College of Naval Warfare, College of Naval Command and Staff, and the Naval Command College are delegated observers.
