This collection contains photographs and negatives depicting numerous events and personnel (faculty, staff and students) from the Naval War College, the surrounding commands on Naval Station Newport and Narragansett Bay, and various scenes from naval history. The collection was likely used for staff reference and for Naval War College Museum displays.
The photographs cover the history of Coasters Harbor Island from when it was a Naval Training Station in the late 19th century through its transition to current Naval Station Newport. The photographs in this collection have many unique to the Naval War College, but some are duplicates found at the National Archives or other repositories. The photographs in this collection show the evolution of the naval presence in Newport and how naval activity transformed much of the area before, during and after the major wars.
