Content Description
Letters John Seacole sent to his father, George Seacole, describing his life aboard ship, scrubbing decks, a fight aboard the vessel, Thanksgiving dinner, his illness, collecting the bounty due him, surety money before going ashore, a democratic meeting in New York City, and requests for stamps and money to buy a book entitled The Kedge Anchor. Seacole, of the 11th New Hampshire Infantry during the Civil War was on board the USS Savannah and USS Chenango.

Biographical Note
John Seacole was a soldier in the 11th New Hampshire Infantry. He served aboard the USS Chenango and the USS Savannah in 1864-1865. Seacole enlisted in Portsmouth, NH on 1863 Dec 22 at the age of 19. He was born in Canada in 1844.
