Collection of Stephen B. Luce and Alfred T. Mahan letters
This collection includes five letters from Stephen B. Luce, founder of the U.S. Naval War College, and one letter from Alfred T. Mahan, esteemed naval officer and historian.
Early records of the U.S. Naval War College
Correspondence, memoranda, lists, contracts, inventories, military and naval orders, and plans regarding the early administration and curriculum of the Naval War College, new building construction, and items relating to the establishment of a naval coaling station in Narraganset Bay. Also included are journals and letterpress copybooks kept by past NWC presidents Charles Stockton and French Chadwick.

Letter from A. R. Yates, Commanding Officer of U.S. Training Station, Newport, R.I., to Admiral Stephen B. Luce about Mr. Sullivan, a contractor working on Coasters Harbor Island. In this letter, Yates explained how he and his authority were ignored by Sullivan and asked Luce if he claimed jurisdiction over the part of the Island where Sullivan was installing a steam pump.

Letter from David B. Harmony to Stephen B. Luce regarding the detail of certain officers at NWC, 1885 Sep 7
Letter from D. B. Harmony, Acting Secretary of the Navy, to Commodore Stephen B. Luce in reply to a letter Luce sent requesting the detail of certain officers for temporary duty at the Naval War College. In response to Luce’s request, Harmony enclosed a copy of General Order No. 337 for Luce’s “information and future guidance.” This enclosure is not found with this letter.
Stapled to this letter is a note that states, “And Politician’s haven’t changed!!”

Letter from E. O. Matthews to Commodore Stephen B. Luce in which he declines Luce’s request that he accept the Professorship of Military Science and History at the Naval War College. Matthews felt that he could not do the subject justice and felt that the Navy should order a naval officer to take this position.
